Egg Throwing

Egg throwing is not a well-known sport, yet millions of people have participated in this unique game.  Egg throwing can be traced back to medieval times when it was an event during the Easter holiday.  These eggs were hard-boiled and tossed around from person to person.  The winner was determined by who was holding the egg at twelve o’clock.  The winner kept the egg as a prize.

Egg throwing has developed over the years into several varieties of the game.  There is now Throwing and Catching, Egg Relay, Accuracy, and Distance.

The Throwing and Catching version has two competitors standing ten metres apart.  Whoever catches the egg at the greatest distance apart is the winner.  One would think that the Distance variation of egg throwing would have the same rules as Throwing and Catching, but it is slightly different.  The goal is still to achieve the greatest distance; however, the game is played by throwing the egg onto grass without breaking it.

The Relay Game is played by teams who must pass twelve eggs at ten-metre intervals over a one hundred metre distance.

The eggs are not boiled in these modern versions of egg throwing, so competitors wear protective clothing.

Over the years egg throwing has grown to the point that there are now local, national, and world championship competitions.  It is even possible to enter an egg throwing game online because of advanced computer technology.  The online game proves to be less likely to get egg in your face.
